In partnership with Institute of Black Intellectual Innovation, Segerstrom Center for the Arts presents its first ever Juneteenth celebration on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza! Join us for an afternoon of interactive activities and artistic performances celebrating Black innovation and resilience in music, poetry, visual art, and gardening. Artistic curation by Dr. Natalie Graham, Director of the Institute of Black Intellectual Innovation at California State University, Fullerton.
To understand why Juneteenth is celebrated, it is also essential to understand the impact of racial slavery in the United States. Stay tuned for resources on the Center’s social media channels for resources and opportunities to learn more about the history of Juneteenth and the significance of honoring Juneteenth today. Dr. Natalie J. Graham is Director of the Institute of Black Intellectual Innovation and Chair of African American Studies at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). She is an award-winning author and performer who has toured nationally with her collection of poems, Begin with a Failed Body. A widely-published scholar of African American Studies, she focuses on food culture, masculinity, and regional identities and has taught cultural studies at the college level for over 12 years. Serving as Project Director and Workshop Co-Facilitator, for many grant-funded projects, she has successfully coordinated and implemented many events across Orange and San Bernardino Counties, including two all-day interactive symposia with over 300 participants each: “Hip Hop’s Rarest Elements: Music, Culture, and Rhetoric” in 2015 and “Black in Bloom: A Black Arts Symposium” in 2018.
As a public and digital historian, Dr. Jamila Moore Pewu’s work explores how and why groups and individuals reimagine the spaces around them to create new urban futures. She is particularly interested in examining the concept of reimagining through the unique historical, geographic and methodological perspectives posed by African Diasporic and or Black Atlantic communities both past and present. As Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities and New Media in History at California State University, Fullerton, Dr. Moore Pewu leads the History department’s digital humanities initiatives. Before pursuing her doctorate in Cultural Studies at the University of California, Davis, she worked at the Museum of African American History in Boston (2003-2004) where she first developed a passion for public history. She currently directs the public digital humanities project, Mapping Arts OC, which launched in 2018 and maps public art and underrepresented artists in Orange County. Her work has received generous support from the National Science Foundation’s Geography and Spatial Sciences Program, The California Humanities, The Graham Foundation for Advanced Study in Fine Art, The Social Science Research Council and several internal awards from California State University Fullerton.

The $10 ticket price for this event includes one socially distanced viewing area (or “pod”), with seating for up to 6 viewers. Only you and those attending with you will be seated in your assigned pod. All supplies required to participate in the festivities will be located at each pod.
Please note the following safety precautions will be in place for this event:
Masks must be worn by all guests upon check-in and until they arrive to their assigned viewing areas. Each viewing area will be separated by 6 feet of space from neighboring viewing areas. Contactless check-in will include a touchless thermometer temperature check and hand sanitizer stations will be accessible throughout the Plaza.
