Description

Friday, June 18

Juneteenth,β€―also known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day, is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of Black Americans who had been enslaved in the United States.

  • Sensational Storytime: (11 AM and 2 PM): A sensational, full-body celebration, led by our Play Partner Gina from the non-profit Jack and Jill. We’ll all gather in the Orange Plaza as she reads All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold
  • Dance Party: (11:15 PM and 2:15 PM): Directly after the story, Gina will lead us in a Dance Party to collectively celebrate the joy of the holiday, while discovering the importance of music and movement to African American culture.
  • Café: Experience Soul Food in the café! Explore traditional soul food along with other kitchen-related materials unique to this holiday.
  • Art Studio: Three opportunities for children to explore materials that relate to Juneteenth – including the Juneteenth flag, a red and blue collaborative project, and interpretations of Juneteenth illustrations.

Play Partner: Gina from Jack and Jill of America

Grown-up Tip: The celebration of Juneteenth teaches children concepts of inclusion, justice, equality, and advocacy. Talk to your child about times when they felt welcomed, understood, heard, and appreciated for who they are. You can also ask them about moments when they helped another feel welcomed.
