littleBits Event - play, create and invent!

By Shirley C. Chang - Macaroni Kid Covina-West Covina October 19, 2016

Few weeks ago we had the chance to check out some great educational toys call littleBits. We were invited to Disney Grand Central Creative Campus to check out some new products by littleBits.  Our kids had a chance to play and create with two different sets. The Gizmos & Gadgets 2nd Edition and Rule your Room Sets.

Well littleBits is not quite a toy, it is more of a building system that allows kids (or adults alike) play, create and invent.  “LittleBits is a platform of easy-to-use electronic building blocks that empower you to invent anything, from your own remote controlled car, to a smart home device. The Bits snap together with magnets, no soldering, no wiring, no programming needed.”

The Gizmos & Gadgets 2nd Edition Kit

The Gizmos & Gadgets Kit, 2nd Edition is the ultimate invention toolbox. It turns screen time into hands-on learning. The kit is bursting with motors, wheels, lights, servos, wireless Bits - everything you need to spark creativity and fun. Invent a remote-controlled car and let your phone do the steering. Or build a caterpillar that crawls with the tap of a tablet! Comes with 13 electronic building blocks, instructions for 16 inventions, and all the accessories and tools you need to unleash the inventor within.

That day the kids made a Remote Control Car, decorated it, and hooked it up to an App, TO STEER IT.

The Rule your Room Kit

The Rule Your Room Kit gives kids the magic touch. With a handful of BitsTM and the brains in your head, you can now transform any boring old object into an awesome, interactive invention. You can prank your mom, create games from scratch and defend your domain from intruders – all with the power of electronics and the stuff you own.

The kids were encourage to use this kit to create inventions to control their stuffs.

Overall it was a fun event.  We also learned that: "As part of the 2016 Disney Accelerator Demo Day, littleBits founder Ayah Bdeir unveiled some exciting plans for robust collaborations with Disney in an effort to help kids cultivate their problem-solving skills, immerse themselves in STEAM, and ultimately prepare themselves for the job landscape of tomorrow.  During her presentation, she specifically discussed a video series about inventing that will feature Disney Characters and littleBits, and that is meant to inspire kids to get creating.  The series will kick-off in a few weeks with the first video featuring Big Hero 6.

In addition, Bdeir also mentioned that littleBits is currently working with the team behind Star Wars on something quite exciting that will be unveiled soon."
